Boyne City, Michigan is a phenomenal hub for fantastic cycling in the “up north” of the lower peninsula. More hills and climbs than you can shake a stick at, quiet “up north” roads (especially during the week), and a vibrant downtown (though you’ll have to be careful about “in season” and pre-season – things get quiet up north out of season). Of course, it goes without saying, the roads are quieter pre-season, so we like to head up the first nice three-day stretch we come across. The photos in this post are from mid-May, just before the summer season kicks off.

The first route for the Boyne City series is from the old Michigan Mountain Mayhem Beat the Heat 100k route, modified to start and finish at Young State Park. My friends, there’s just too much good in this route to list. It’s unquestionably fun.
Should you find yourself needing lunch, you can add a couple of extra miles at mile 52 and head into Petosky where you’ll find everything from fast food to sit down restaurants.
Without reservation, I can say this is one of my top three favorite road trip locales in Michigan.
You can find Young State Park campground through a web search, or stay at an inn in Boyne City, just a mile or so from the route.
