Mid-Michigan’s Easiest, BEST 200k EVAH! Midland’s Tridge to The Middle of Nowhere Along the Pere-Marquette Rail Trail… ENJOY!

I’ve done this more than once – well, just once for the 200k, but I did that solo. Actually, all of my big rides up there were solo. I wrote about one (here) and the big 200k (here).

So, first things first; as much as I hate to say it, you have to stop at the intersections with roads. You have to. There have been a couple of times if I hadn’t, I’d have been flattened. I’m sure the locals can blow through a few intersections when they come to know them, but I’m not at that level and I wouldn’t recommend trying to get there. You don’t get second chances with this.

With that out of the way, the trail from Midland to Clare is simply fantastic. Restroom stops along the way, they’ve got everything. From Clare on, well, let’s just say it’s rustic. There isn’t much. Use your phone to locate a gas station so you can refill your water bottles and grab a bite to eat if you need. If you’re going self-sustained, fill up in Clare because there isn’t much after.

That said, the speed and course is easy till you get to Clare. Watch yourself going through town as you have to get off the trail and ride the roads to the American Legion hall where you can hop back on the trail. If I do the 200 again, I’ll stop for a quick bite to eat in Clare. There’s quite a bit to choose from downtown or head north, off route, on Business 127 to get to some fast food before hitting that last 30 miles.

    • It looks better than it feels… it’s a “rail trail” so the you can’t even feel the grade… coming down OR going up. It feels almost like a flat shot out and all the way back.
